Lanarkshire police launch speeding crackdown in danger 'hot spots'

Lanarkshire police recently launched a crackdown against speeding drivers in the area.

A number of community police in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, in conjunction with road policing colleagues, carried out days of action targeting motorists breaking the speed limit at known “hot spot” locations across the area.

Several speeding warnings were issued as a result of the initiative, while an arrest was made for someone allegedly driving .under the influence of drink/drugs.

Dangerous driving and speeding has been a constant concern for local residents in recent months, with traffic levels increasing again as more people return to work following the pandemic.

Although the majority of motorists were complying with the speed limit, several vehicles being driven in excess of it were stopped and drivers given corrective advice.

A total of six speeding warnings were given and one speeding ticket was issued, along with fixed penalties for various driving offences.

Rutherglen police Inspector, Kevin Miller, stated: "Road safety remains a policing priority particularly when driving in excess of the speed limits is one of the most common contributory factors resulting in a road traffic collision.

"We will continue to carry out regular speed checks along with mobile patrols to influence driver behaviour and reduce the number of accidents on our roads, taking enforcement action where necessary.

"I would urge all motorists to be vigilant and take extra care particularly during the summer holidays and lighter nights when children and young persons will be using the road network."

The police plan to continue with further days of action during the summer in conjunction with officers from road policing with a particular focus planned on a summer drink/drug drive campaign.
