Lanarkshire police launch appeal after a number of mobility cars have breaks cut

Police in Lanarkshire have launched an investigation after a number of vehicles, including mobility cars and work vans, had the wires to the anti-lock braking system cut.

Around 10 vehicles have been targeted and had the system, which prevents your car from skidding when you brake sharply, cut between August and October 2022 in the Langside Avenue and West Avenue area of Viewpark.

Cops are now advising that residents in the area should check if their vehicles have been tampered with as a light should appear on your dashboard if the system is not working correctly.

Constable Neill Campbell, Community Policing Team, Bellshill, said: “We are urging people to contact police if their vehicle has been tampered with. Our understanding is that if the anti-lock braking system is not working, a light will appear on the dashboard alerting you to the fact.

“Again, we have been advised that the vehicle’s brakes will still work, although with a reduced capacity. The anti-lock braking system (ABS) is designed to stop your car from skidding when you brake sharply.

“Officers have attended local community meetings to advise of the vandalisms and have been carrying out enquiries in the area since it was first reported to police. Local CCTV and doorbell footage has been checked in the streets affected but so far no one has been seen at the vehicles.

“Why someone would commit this reckless act has still to be established. There doesn’t appear to be any link between anyone involved other than they live in this particular area. We have had no reports of this happening anywhere else in the Viewpark or wider Lanarkshire area. At this time, it appears to be completely random but concentrated in this particular area.

“Officers will continue to patrol the area but would appeal to people to check any dash-cam or doorbell footage they may have or get in touch if they have seen anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles in the area.

“If you have any information that may assist officers with their investigation, please call police via 101 quoting reference number 3118 of Friday, 26 August 2022."
