Lanarkshire pensioner's life saved after quick-thinking residents use nearby defibrillator

Quick-thinking Lanarkshire residents helped to save a pensioner's life after he collapsed in the street.

The man had a heart attack while walking along Dukes Road in the Burnside area of Rutherglen last Friday.

Passers-by rushed to help out, with one local racing to the nearby Tesco on Stonelaw Road to access its defibrillator.

Using the device and CPR, the good Samaritans were able to help stabilise the OAP until an ambulance arrived.

The man is believed to be in a stable condition and recovering after a weekend in hospital.

Eugenie Aroutcheff, who lives on the street, was one of the people who rushed to provide first aid.

She told Lanarkshire Live : "There was a man out with a stick, I believe he's local to Rutherglen.

Eugenie Aroutcheff (Rutherglen Reformer)

"He just collapsed when walking along the street.

"There was a passing motorist who stopped and gave him CPR. I just went out straight away, and someone else went down to Tesco to get the defibrillator.

"When it was brought back it was just a matter the advice on how to use it and going from there.

"I'm a first aider, but I've never had to actually practice it before.

"When you realise it's actually a matter of life and death you are trying to keep yourself calm, but luckily the man performing CPR was very calm and collected and that really helped.

"It just highlights the importance of having defibrillators available and accessible so quickly. It's important that people know they are out there and that they are easy to use, because they can make a big difference."

Eugenie and other locals were then able to wait with the ill man until an ambulance arrived.

There are a number of defibrillators in the Burnside area, including at the Ace Place nursery and Burnside Pharmacy, as well as at Tesco.
