Lanarkshire pensioner in court charged with attempted murder

A pensioner has been charged with attempted murder following an alleged incident in Lanark at the weekend.

The 66-year-old was arrested and charged after another man was rushed to hospital after being seriously injured on St Leonard Street in Lanark.

The 69-year-old was taken to Wishaw General Hospital for treatment shortly after 11.30pm on Saturday, July 9, and was said to be in a serious condition.

A major police investigation into the circumstances was launched with a 66-year-old arrested a short time later. He appeared at Lanark Sheriff Court on Monday charged with attempted murder.

However, Police Scotland have now confirmed that the injured man died in hospital on July 12.

A statement from the force said: “Officers were called to a serious assault at a premises on St Leonard Street, Lanark at around 11.30pm on Saturday, July 9, 2022.

“A 69-year-old man sustained serious injuries and was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, where he died on Tuesday, July 12.

“A 66-year-old man was arrested and charged with attempted murder and appeared at Lanark Sheriff Court on Monday, July 11, 2022. Enquiries into the incident are ongoing.”
