Lanarkshire Out of School Project appeals for funding to avoid closure

Organisers of the Cambuslang Out of School Project are appealing for funding after being hit financially because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The project, which was registered in 2003 and is the only one in the area, may be forced to close without additional funds.

The out-of-school care has been run by a group of volunteer board members, made up of parents of children that attend and parents of children who previously attended.

The project is the only registered charity that is a non profit in the area.

Mhari Henderson, manager for the out-of-school centre, told Lanarkshire Live : “When COVID hit, it had a negative impact upon us.

"We had between 28-30 children taking part, then come March 2020 we went down to six kids.

“Whenever the schools were closed we had to close as well.

“We managed to stay open for a few weeks for a few families that were key workers to help them out.

“Even though we were closed we still have bills and rent, we had to reserve the building and had wages to pay.”

The project, like many, applied for a government grant and received it but it simply wasn’t enough to cover the expenses.

Mhari added: “We’re now at the point where we have a deficit every month. We need more kids and we need more funding and just help in general.

“Every single penny we get from the parents goes straight back into the centre.”

The project currently has eight members of staff and around 20 children, but most are only part-time.

The children have access to a variety of activities when they come to the centre, with a pool table, soft play, and are currently doing activities for the Winter Olympics.

There is also a large outdoor area for the children to play in.

Staff are also currently in the process of organising a sponsored walk to raise money for the centre and can contact the centre via their email, managercosc@yahoo.com
