Lanarkshire opticians take delivery of 'world-leading' equipment to capture and view images from the back of the eye

A Coatbridge opticians has a clear vision of the future after taking delivery of a "world-leading" piece of equipment that captures and views images from the back of the eye.

Jacqueline Meade Opticians say the Optomap scan, until recently mainly available only in hospitals, will support its aim to "provide world class eyecare for the local community".

The innovative technology was invented in Scotland by a company called Optos and is now exported worldwide.

The product was developed after the inventor’s son went blind despite having examinations using traditional equipment.

Jacqueline Meade, optometrist and owner of Jacqueline Meade Opticians, told Lanarkshire Live : "I am delighted to offer our patients the world-leading Optomap scan.

"Previously only available in hospitals, this patented technology provides an unparalleled image of the back of the eye.

"Since we can see much more, we can be significantly more confident that the eye is healthy, or we can identify eye conditions much earlier.

"Your eyesight is precious and we believe that the Optomap scan, combined with other leading diagnostics we perform, allows us to identify and treat eye conditions before they affect your sight."

The new technology's arrival comes just four months after the opticians won Best Practice of the Year title at Eyecare Scotland’s Practice of the Year awards 2022.

The practice, which has been open in the town’s Bank Street for over 30 years, has remained an integral part of the Coatbridge community and competed against a host of its peers from across Lanarkshire and beyond, to win the coveted title.
