Lanarkshire museum announces fabulous four-day jubilee programme

Summerlee industrial heritage museum has announced a four-day programme of events to mark the Queen’s platinum jubilee weekend from June 2 to 5.

Events at the Coatbridge attraction will include hosting an official jubilee street party as well as a special trail around the grounds, 1950s street games and a small display of vintage vehicles – including an ice cream van providing tasty treats.

A number of events will be taking place across North Lanarkshire to mark the historic occasion, including a beacon-lighting ceremony and the creation of new avenues of trees in three of the area’s parks.

Summerlee’s programme celebrating the seven decades includes a twice-daily teddy bears’ picnic and family story walk, “meet the ponies”, music-making sessions and creative challenges including making bunting, flags and tissue posies.

There will also be performances over the course of the four-day holiday weekend from both Grace Notes and the North Lanarkshire community choirs and by dancers Tap 2 Pointe, Babyballet and Jump n Jive.

Entry to the museum, which is open from 10am to 4pm daily, is free of charge and no advance booking is required.

Lanarkshire’s celebratory events include lighting two beacons at Strathclyde Park on June 2, with music from the award-winning North Lanarkshire schools’ pipe band and South Lanarkshire schools’ chorus, respectively performing jubilee pieces Die Regnare and A Song for the Commonwealth.

The beacons will be lit by lord lieutenant Lady Susan Haughey, who said: “With Her Majesty celebrating a magnificent 70 years of public service, this Platinum Jubilee offers a wonderful opportunity for communities to celebrate this truly historic occasion.

“I would encourage as many people as possible to get involved at this moment of national celebration – this unique anniversary will provide the chance to celebrate a joyful occasion after what has been a very difficult past couple of years during the health pandemic.”

New avenues of trees are being created at three North Lanarkshire parks as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy project, with work already underway on the new wooded areas at Drumpellier park in Coatbridge, Duchess of Hamilton park in Motherwell and Palacerigg country park in Cumbernauld.

Residents in Glenmavis will also be enjoying a special event to mark the historic first-ever platinum jubilee thanks to the support of National Lottery funding after its Village Events Group received £6240 from Awards for All to “organise an event for the community to help celebrate” , becoming one of 28 groups across Scotland to share £112,000 in support from the fund.

National Lottery community fund Scotland chair Kate Still said: “After the past couple of years these celebrations will be extra special as we come together once again, and it’s all made possible thanks to National Lottery players; I wish all the groups the very the best of luck with their events.”

Meanwhile, housebuilder Taylor Wimpey is also marking the jubilee with open days at its developments including Cambuslang and Moodiesburn on June 4 and 5, when all local residents are invited to drop in for refreshments throughout the two days.

Company representative Kirsty McGill said: ““Building communities is at the heart of what we do, and we’re really excited to have this chance to welcome everyone in to join us. The Queen’s platinum jubilee is a historic milestone and a great opportunity for people to celebrate together.”
