Lanarkshire murder-bid woman jailed for spitting on officer

A Hamilton woman awaiting trial for trying to murder her mum got into more trouble while on bail.

Angela Boyle spat on a police officer's face after emergency services workers had been called out to help her.

Boyle, of Almada Tower, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

The 47-year-old admitted assaulting the officer in Muir Street, Hamilton, on November 6.

Allegations that she slapped a paramedic and kicked a defibrillator were dropped.

Boyle was jailed for seven years at the High Court in Edinburgh in December.

A jury found her guilty of attempting to murder her mum at a flat in Glasgow in February 2019.

The victim was throttled with phone cables and stabbed repeatedly during what the judge described as an "unprovoked and extremely violent" attack.

Boyle also tried to pull out her mum's tongue and attempted to force her to swallow her false teeth.

The woman was treated for multiple injuries including an open wound near the jugular vein in her neck.

Boyle, who couldn't explain her behaviour, had claimed that her mental condition at the time was such that she wasn't responsible for her actions.

Describing the Almada Street incident, prosecutor Aga Mathieson said members of the public called the emergency services in the afternoon as they were concerned for Boyle's welfare.

She was "extremely intoxicated" and a spit hood was applied after she spat on the officer's face.

Defence agent Ian Scott said his client had suffered an "episode", adding: "When police officers were restraining her it brought back memories of an assault on her.

"However, she is highly embarrassed by her behaviour."

Sheriff Linda Nicolson jailed Boyle for seven months with immediate effect, meaning it has no impact on her seven-year sentence.
