Lanarkshire mum and daughter have caught the bug for litter-picking

A mum and daughter litter-picking duo braved the elements to collect the rubbish that has accumulated in woods near where they live.

Lydia Morgan and her daughter Savannah began taking walks in Cambusnethan, Wishaw as exercise therapy for Lydia's Parkinson’s symptoms.

On their first walk, they were shocked at the sheer volume of rubbish they encountered, and decided there and then to tackle the issue head-on.

On their first day, the pair filled up the boot of their car with empty bottles and even dozens of golf balls.

Another day of litter picking saw Lydia and Savannah filling another boot load of plumbing pipe, rusted bits of scaffolding, a even a cracked toilet bowl.

Lydia told Lanarkshire Live: "The refuse we have unearthed from the forest isn’t the result of wholesale fly-tipping, it is the result of callous, unthinking, and selfish people deliberately throwing their rubbish away without thinking of the effect it has on the natural environment.

"Over two days of litter picking, we filled the boot of our car twice. We kept finding huge amounts of refuse, easily filling a dozen extra-large black bin bags each day.

In a two-day effort, the pair managed to fill around two dozen bin bags of rubbish (Stuart Vance/Reach PLC)

"Litter-picking at this scale is not without its hazards. On more than one occasion we had to flee from swarms of agitated wasps which had nested near mounds of rubbish."

The mum and daughter also had praise for the efforts of North Lanarkshire Council, which made sure the rubbish was safely collected and disposed of.

Lydia said: "Kenny Caulfield (responsible for all the public bins in our area) has been of tremendous help.

"When he discovered the amount of rubbish we were collecting he organised litter-picking sticks, black bin bags, and gloves.

"Each time we accumulated huge piles of filled bags he arranged to collect them, as prior to that we were taking loads to the dump in the boot of the car. He has been a real hero."
