Lanarkshire mum about to become a grandmother for the first time passed away two days after cancer diagnosis

A Lanarkshire mum who was getting ready to welcome her first grandchild died just two days after being diagnosed with cancer.

Nail technician Janice Cassidy Adair, 46, from Coatbridge, died on August 31 from bone and liver cancer.

Janice had only recently found out she was going to be a grandparent for the first time following the news that daughter, Laura Kirk, was expecting.

Heartbroken Laura, 19, said she was glad her mum was able to be at her baby's gender reveal on August 15 and that Janice couldn’t wait to meet her grandson.

Laura added: "For a couple of weeks she had not been well but she went and got bloods done and the doctors thought it might have been jaundice.

"However, the doctors said it didn't look too good and they suspected it was cancer so they did a scan which confirmed mum had liver and bone cancer.

"They couldn't give her the MRI scan because she actually was struggling to stay awake and answer questions, she was not compos mentis.

"The doctors said they couldn't do anymore and she passed away in hospital.

"I had gone to see her and I know her so I could tell she was sugar coating something but then the doctor spoke to me and I was taken aback.

"My mum just accepted it, we knew she wasn't well and was in pain but we never thought it was cancer.

"She was well known and much-loved, she was bubbly and happy, she didn't take any nonsense but she was a good woman.

“It felt so sudden, it was like she was gone in the blink of an eye.”

Laura Kirk also posted a tribute to her mum on Facebook, writing: "So as some of you already know our beautiful mum fell asleep last night after unfortunately losing her battle to cancer.

"It all happened too fast but I'm so glad I got to spend my time with you. Thank you for everything you have done for me in my lifetime, I'm so grateful.

"You are at peace now and out of all pain and now resting, we all love you so much mum and you are truly missed so much already, sleep tight mama you are so loved."

Janice’s other children, Iain Kirk, 22, Logan Adair, 11, and Kian Adair, seven, are all still reeling from her death.

Laura added: “My mum was my best friend, I spoke to her all day, every day.

“It doesn’t feel real, she was gone so fast.”

Around 150 mourners gathered to celebrate Janice's life at an emotional funeral service last week.

Family and friends wore purple, Janice's favourite colour, as they said their poignant farewells at MacGregor Family Funeral Directors.

A GoFundMe page set up to help cover the costs of Janice’s funeral quickly raised over £1000 from kind-hearted contributors.
