Lanarkshire MSPs condemn 'heart-breaking' Ukraine invasion

Lanarkshire MSPs have joined the condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine which has seen so many people flee their homeland.

The United Nations (UN) say 1.5million refugees have now fled, after the invasion ordered by Russian President Vladimir Putin, as violence and destruction engulfs the war-torn country.

Rocket attacks have continued on residential areas in several cities, Ukraine says, warning of an all-out assault on the capital Kyiv.

East Kilbride MSP Collette Stevenson said: “The situation in Ukraine is heart-breaking. Putin’s aggressive invasion must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

"Given the indiscriminate killing of civilians and the attacks on health facilities, Putin must be investigated for war crimes. And we must take action to ensure he pays a very high price.

“All the main political parties in Scotland and the UK are agreed on the need for sanctions against Putin and his billionaire cronies.

"Sanctions must be as severe and comprehensive as possible.

"While some were introduced as soon as the invasion started, the UK Government does seem to be lagging behind Western allies.

“More must be done and done quickly, otherwise it will be too late for the sanctions to have any meaningful effect.

"People in East Kilbride and across the country are showing their support and solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and many people have contacted me asking about how to help.

"I would encourage constituents to visit www.ready.scot/humanitarian to find out more.

"There is a local collection at St Leonard’s Church for items to support Ukrainian refugees in Poland. Monetary donations can also be made by visiting www.dec.org.uk or phoning 020 3983 9000.”

Labour Central Scotland MSP, Monica Lennon, said: "I stand in complete solidarity with the Ukrainian people as they bravely resist Vladimir Putin’s violent invasion.

"Innocent people are fleeing a war that is already having tragic consequences. Our community is showing incredible humanitarian support, with donation drives one of many efforts going on across Lanarkshire.

"I have reached out to the Polish community to thank them for the immediate support and sanctuary provided by the people of Poland.

"We must also recognise the many brave people of Russia who are vocally opposing Putin’s regime and making clear that this war is not in their name. These are dangerous times and I am praying for peace and justice in Ukraine and Europe."
