Lanarkshire MSP urges older residents to air views on future provision of health and social care

Neil Gray is urging older people in Lanarkshire to take part in a new government consultation on the health and social care.

This is in the hope it will help finalise the National Care Service and ensure Lanarkshire's elderly residents have some of the best care and support in the world.

Views are also being sought from clinicians, health professionals and social care staff who provide this care, to help ensure integrated care is available for all older people, whatever their needs and wherever they live.

The Holyrood representative for Airdrie and Shotts is asking locals to take part in the Health and Social care Strategy for Older People.

He told Lanarkshire Live : “It is vital that support and care for older people in Scotland is developed based on the views of those who need it.

"Elderly care is quite different from that of children and younger adults and therefore any framework must reflect that.

“I would ask all older people in Airdrie and Shotts to fill in the consultation or, if they cannot do so themselves, ask a friend or family member to log their opinions for them.”

The consultation is seeking views on a broad range of issues, including:

  • The impact the pandemic has had on accessing mental health services and how best to improve access to mental health services for older people
  • When is a good time to have difficult discussions about planning future care needs and who should be involved?
  • What could be done to improve joint working between health and social care services?
  • What support would help in self-managing general health or any long-term health conditions?
  • How to make it easier for older people to access leisure facilities
  • When thinking about palliative and end of life care in Scotland, what is working well and what end of life care and support would people want?
