A Lanarkshire MSP has reminded locals that successful new claims for pension credit received by December 18 are set to qualify for an additional cost of living payment.
Pension Credit aims to give applicants extra money to help with living costs if the person is over state pension age and on a low income
It is estimated that around 30 per cent of those entitled to the credit haven’t applied for it, so many are missing out on their entitlement and may therefore also lose out on the additional cost of living payment.
A £324 payment is available to families on low income benefits or tax credits, including Universal Credit, income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance, income-related Employment and Support Allowance, and Pension Credit.
The UK Government has confirmed pension credit applications must be in by December 18, if the application is deemed successful, for the cost of living payment to be provided. Existing pension credit claimants don’t need to apply and the payment will be made automatically.
Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey is encouraging older people to check their eligibility to Pension Credit and make an application in time for the bonus payment.
She said: "This time of year is often very tough for those of pension age due to the financial cost of keeping homes warmer and more often. However, this year things will be particularly difficult due to the cost of living crisis.
"It is estimated that more than 800,000 eligible pensioners across the UK are missing out on Pension Credit, and now is the best time check your eligibility.
"People must successfully apply for Pension Credit by December 18 to be in line for the extra £324 through the Cost of Living payment."
Pension Credit is known as a ‘passport benefit’ as it allows claimants access to other forms of support, such as: Housing Benefit if you rent the property you live in, Council Tax discount, free TV licence if you are aged 75 or over, and help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments.
Applicants may only be eligible for this payment if they were of state pension age between August 26 and September 25, if they have a partner both must have reached State Pension age, and assuming they meet the further criteria.
