Lanarkshire MSP gives her support to inaugural Scottish Games Week

A Lanarkshire MSP has thrown her support behind the inaugural Scottish Games Week.

Clare Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, hosted an event in the Scottish Parliament to mark the initiative which brought together experts and stakeholders from across the games sector.

Scottish Games Week is coordinated by the Scottish Games Network, with support from the Scottish Government’s Tech Ecosystem Review (STER) fund.

Scotland has played a pioneering role in the evolution of the games sector since the late 1980s and continues to produce some of the world’s most popular games, including Grand Theft Auto and Minecraft for consoles.

Scottish games development companies employ over 6000 people and are worth around £350 million to the Scottish economy

Ms Adamson said: “We hope that Scottish Games Week will challenge the perception of games as mere entertainment on the Playstation or Xbox.

“The games sector in Scotland is rightly recognised as pioneering but there is much more we could be doing to embed it in public policy. Its growth potential is utterly enormous; creativity, entrepreneurship and technological advancement are at the heart of the sector.

“Through the right business support and skills development, we could overtake countries like Finland, where their model sees videogames generate upwards of 2.4 billion Euros.

“We need to recognise and maximise this incredible potential.”
