Lanarkshire MSP demands financial intervention from UK Government on energy costs

A Lanarkshire MSP has demanded urgent financial intervention from the UK government to support people with spiralling energy costs.

Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson has called on the UK Government to scrap the upcoming increase to the energy price cap, double the energy grant to £800 and ensure all payments are made by the beginning of October.

She'd also like to see them introduce an energy price cap for small and medium enterprises and bring in a further broader windfall tax to include all large businesses who made significant profits during the pandemic.

A recent study found that 72.8 per cent of those living in Scotland will fall into fuel poverty by January 2023 without further action from the UK Government.

Ms Adamson told Lanrkshire Live : “The Tories must peel themselves away from their dismal leadership contest and instead focus on actual leadership.

"The current Prime Minister is on a farewell jolly and the candidates to replace him are silent on energy costs.

“The UK Government response to soaring bills has been non-existent. Rather, they prioritise unworkable tax cuts for party donors.

“The energy price cap is worthless without reform. We need to see action.

“People have been pushed into destitution by the UK Government’s cuts.

"Lives will be lost this winter without Government intervention but, still, they do nothing.

“The case for freedom from this corrupt system grows by the day. Scotland needs full governmental and fiscal autonomy.”
