Lanarkshire MSP calls for Prime Minister to resign following Sue Gray report

A Lanarkshire MSP has reiterated her calls for the Prime Minister to resign following the publication of the Sue Gray report.

The damning report into the behaviour of Boris Johnson and those inside Downing Street throughout the pandemic should bring an end to his premiership, says Scottish Greens MSP Gillian Mackay.

The long-awaited report, published today, reveals a culture of law-breaking at the heart of government during the public health emergency, beyond a scale many would have imagined.

Among its conclusions, Ms Gray states: "The senior leadership at the centre, both political and official, must bear responsibility for this culture."

Gillian Mackay said: “This report is damning and lays bare the utter contempt the Prime Minister has for the general public.

“At a time when people across the UK were making unbelievable sacrifices, Boris Johnson and his entourage were living it up, breaking the rules, and laughing about it, time after time.

“For those of us who lost a loved one during the pandemic this is no laughing matter.

“The Prime Minister’s behaviour is bad enough on its own. But, his constant and repeated lying, to parliament and the public, cannot be tolerated.

“Boris Johnson must be held to account for this appalling behaviour. He can no longer remain in post.

“If Scottish Tory leader Douglas Ross wishes to salvage any remnant of self-respect, he must end his pathetic equivocation and resubmit his letter calling for Johnson to go.”

Motherwell and Wishaw MSP Clare Adamson labelled the Prime Minister "a serial liar who repeatedly and deliberately misled the public and Parliament".

She added: “He has presided over a culture of partying and lawbreaking at the heart of Government.

“The indifference, arrogance, and contempt he has shown for the righteous anger of the people he is there to represent speaks volumes for his lack of morality.

“We have long known he is unfit for office. His presence in Downing Street undermines our democratic institutions.

"They partied while thousands mourned. And the disgusting treatment of cleaning and security staff at Downing Street epitomises the man, and this corrupt administration, devoid of decency.

"What more is there to say? The sooner he is gone, the better. I hope his Tory acolytes find a backbone before he does any more damage."

Former Scottish Conservative leader Ruth Davidson said some of the findings in Ms Gray’s report were “grim”.

Following the release of the full report, opponents have now called on the Scottish Conservative leader to re-submit his letter to the 1922 Committee.

However, the UK Government Scottish Secretary Alister Jack said: “I understand that people are angry about what happened in Downing Street.

"The Prime Minister has apologised again today, and made clear that he takes full responsibility for what went on in No 10.

“Lessons have been learned and changes have been made within No 10.

“The Prime Minister has my full support. He is tackling the rising cost of living at home and leading the international response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“Now, we all need to get behind him and back him in dealing with these important issues.”
