Lanarkshire motorists warned of continued disruption as road closure extended

Motorists are being warned of an extension to the road closure in place in Stonehouse as part of its £2.5m project to help reduce sewer flooding.

A section of Townhead Street was shut at the end of August to allow the latest phase to go ahead after pipelaying work, carried out by Scottish Water, through the grounds of the primary school was completed.

Georgina Reid, Scottish Water’s corporate affairs manager for the west said: “The plan was to lift the road closure after three months but unfortunately the work has been slowed by a significant number of unchartered services.

“These all add to the time it takes to safely lay the new pipework and unfortunately that means we cannot reopen the road at the end of November as planned.

“We would like to apologise for the delay and thank the local community who have been extremely supportive and understanding while we carry out these essential and much-needed works.”

The current traffic management will now be in place until Sunday, December 4, 2022.

All traffic management has been agreed with South Lanarkshire Council.

While local bus services have been affected, Scottish Water would like to thank local bus company Whitelaws, Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) and South Lanarkshire Council for their efforts to minimise disruption as far as possible.

Further information on the project to help prevent sewer flooding in Stonehouse which begans in October 2021 can be found online.
