Lanarkshire man scores with charity football match

A kind-hearted Lanarkshire man has organised an Old Firm charity match to raise money for a cause that supported his family through tragedy.

Liam Scullion, from Cambuslang, organised the match in memory of his uncle, Eddie Buchan.

All proceeds raised from the event will be given to FAMS – which supports families affected by suicide and murder.

The charity has a special place in Liam’s heart as it helped support his mum after the loss of his uncle.

Liam told Lanarkshire Live: “I’ve had amazing help from my mum planning this, as well as a lot of my family and friends.

“I wanted to organise the event because I recently lost my uncle to suicide. My family has really struggled. It’s been hard and my mum started going to FAMS meetings, which has helped her a lot.

“FAMS have helped my family and I feel like it’s the right thing to try to raise money for them, so we can make sure there’s still enough funding to keep the meetings going.”

The game kicks off at noon this Sunday, June 19, at Legends on Somervell Street, which has a pitch at the back.

Tickets are available for £5 and can be bought on the day. Other activities such as a tombola, live music and a selection of stalls will help raise as much money as possible.

Liam added: “It’s been difficult and stressful planning it but it’s something that will definitely be worth it when we manage to raise money. I can’t thank everyone enough who has helped with setting it up and donations.

“I’m excited for Sunday now. It’s our friends and family that are playing for both the Celtic and Rangers teams.”

Ann Marie Cocooza is the founder of FAMS (Families and Friends Affected by Murder Suicide). She said: “FAMS are always really appreciative and always in awe of the kindness of others. With the support of the families and donations raised by those families, it allows FAMS to provide free traumatic and trauma services to people that are affected by suicide and murder.

“We’re also so grateful for the kindness of people who help our organisation.”
