Lanarkshire man jailed for subjecting partner to seven months of 'intolerable' abuse

A Motherwell man has been jailed for more than a year after subjecting his partner to seven months of violence.

John Clemenson claimed to remember little about the physical abuse because he was drinking at least a bottle of tonic wine every day at the time.

Clemenson, 24, of McClurg Court, was sentenced at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He admitted assaults on the woman at flats in the town's Watson Street and Netherwood Tower on various occasions between Christmas Day 2018 and July 17 the following year.

Clemenson punched, slapped and kicked his victim, chased her about the property and threw her against furniture.

On one occasion he grabbed her hair, forced her on to a couch, sat on top of her and compressed her throat.

Defence agent Gerry McGuire said alcohol was an issue for both parties during the three-year relationship.

The lawyer stated: "His recollection is less than clear as he was drinking excessively every day.

"Bottles of tonic wine were consumed daily. The only thing stopping him from drinking more was a lack of money.

"He can only apologise for his behaviour. He is in custody for another matter and has made progress."

Sheriff Linda Nicolson jailed Clemenson for 382 days, telling him: "I've formed the view that the only option is custody.

"Your behaviour towards the complainer in this case was intolerable."
