Lanarkshire man jailed after threatening to break ex's leg and assaulting her teenage son

A thug threatened to break his ex-partner's leg and warned he would stab anyone who called the police.

James McCarron then made threats against police officers, spitting at one and trying to bite another.

The 39-year-old was jailed for 22 months at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted threatening or abusive behaviour at his ex-partner's home in Larkhall, on February 19.

He also admitted assaulting her teenage son, challenging police to fight, resisting arrest and police assault.

McCarron has a long list of previous convictions and is currently the subject of a three-year non-harassment order in respect of his former partner.

Alice Carey, prosecuting, said he turned up at her home, started shouting and swearing then struggled with the woman who had asked him several times to leave.

When her son intervened, McCarron, shoved him and ripped his t-shirt.

Ms Carey told the court he threatened to break the woman's leg and to stab others who contacted the police.

The fiscal added: "McCarron was arrested in Merryton Street. He spat at a police officer, but the spittle missed.

"He threatened to 'bite off' the officer's face then warned 'If I had a knife you would know about it because it would be in you'.

"Later, at Coatbridge police station, he was again hostile and lunged forward in an attempt to bite an officer's hand.

"He told officers 'I hope your weans die'."

McCarron's lawyer said his client "has anger management issues", but has taken steps to address these while in custody awaiting the case.

Passing sentence, Sheriff Ray Small told the accused: "This was unacceptable behaviour towards the police.

"These were very unpleasant threats."

The 22-month sentence was backdated as McCarron has been in custody since his arrest in February.
