Lanarkshire man given 200 hours of unpaid work after hiding 1kg of cannabis in his garden

A Lanarkshire man who hid a kilo of cannabis in his garden has been placed under supervision for 18 months and must attend addiction counselling.

Haydn Cameron was also ordered to do 200 hours of unpaid community work when he appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He claimed he was only looking after the package to pay off a debt.

Cameron, 28, admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis at his home in Bent Crescent, Viewpark, on July 7 this year.

He also admitted having a small amount of the drug for his own use.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard the one-kilo package was worth up to £10,000 if subdivided and sold in 1g deals.

Police officers found it next to a wheelie bin in the garden.

Cameron has previous convictions for drugs offences and served sentences totalling 33 months.

Defence agent David Kinloch told the court: “He has been a long term habitual user of cannabis.

“His use of the drug has brought him into contact with others further up the scale.

“He got out of prison in August 2020 and owed money to people.

“He went back to smoking cannabis for which he wasn’t paying. He was then asked to look after some.”

Cameron was remanded in custody for several months after an initial court appearance and lost his job at a bakery as a result.

Mr Kinloch added: “He is an intelligent young man with a good background. He has learned his lesson.”
