Lanarkshire man caught breaking into his mum's home twice and stealing cash

A man broke into his mother's Hamilton home twice in the space of five days despite bail conditions banning him from going near her.

Jason Buchanan stole cash on the first occasion, but after breaking in a second time he was found lying on a bed.

Buchanan, 27, a prisoner, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week.

He admitted breaking into the Udston Road property on November 18 and 22, unlawful possession of scissors in a public place and breaching bail conditions.

Aga Mathieson, prosecuting, said the woman was in her home when she heard knocking on the door at around 8.25pm.

The fiscal stated: "She then heard breaking glass in the bathroom and saw her son enter via the window.

"She started screaming because she was scared and ran out of the house and phoned the police.

"Her son left via the broken window and climbed down the drainpipe.

"Police officers arrived and he was arrested as he tried to climb a fence. He had money and bank cards from his mum's purse and was also carrying a pair of scissors.

"The house had been ransacked."

Buchanan appeared in court the next day and was released, but he went back to his mum's house a few days later despite bail conditions banning him from entering Hamilton.

She was out in the morning when a neighbour called her to report noises coming from her home.

The police were alerted and officers found Buchanan had again broken in via the bathroom window. He was lying upstairs in a bedroom.

Buchanan had been held in custody since his arrest in November, but Sheriff Linda Nicolson released him on a community payback order.

He will be under social work supervision for two years.

Buchanan is also prevented from leaving his home between 7pm and 7am each day for eight months under an electronic tagging order.
