Lanarkshire man behind bars after sending cocaine through the post to prisoner

A man is behind bars after sending a prisoner a haul of cocaine through the post.

John Stewart mailed the package to an inmate at Glenochil Jail in Alloa in May 2020.

He sent the box via "special delivery" at a post office branch in Rutherglen.

A week later, prison officers became aware of the parcel.

The box contained a number of items including a white travel mug, which appeared "heavier than expected".

Prosecutor Owen Mullan today told the High Court in Glasgow: "It was scanned through the X-ray machine.

"An unknown substance was seen within the inner and outer casing."

The prisoner - who was named in court - was called to see staff and said the parcel had been "ordered from Amazon via a friend".

The mug was then cut open and the casing pulled apart to reveal a stash of hidden white powder.

Mr Mullan said the cocaine had a street value of £1000, but within the prison system could be worth five times as much.

Police later raided Stewart's home in Rutherglen in December 2020.

He went on to admit there was cocaine in a holdall. Officer found two taped packages inside.

The court heard a sample of the cocaine was at least 76 per cent pure.

The drugs had a potential value of up to £240,800.

Allan McLeod, defending, today said: "He advises me he was asked to post the package. He did not receive payment for it.

"For the other charge, he was offered the chance to make some money in the run up to Christmas.

"He was given a few hundred pounds to hold onto this holdall.

"He had it for around 24 hours before police came to the door."

Stewart today pled guilty to two charges of being concerned in the supply of cocaine.

He had been on bail, but was remanded in custody by judge Lord Armstrong.

Sentencing was deferred for reports until next month.
