Lanarkshire locals back cancer support charity to match Tunnock’s £50,000 challenge

The people of Lanarkshire have once again stepped-up a gear despite tough times to raise over £72,000 in just three months for cancer support centre, Maggie’s.

Residents took on various challenges in a bid to match-fund the £50,000 Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Challenge that philanthropist and well known biscuiteer, Sir Boyd Tunnock had set back in August.

From taking part in Firewalks and exhausting ‘Three Peaks Challenges’, walking the Glasgow Culture Crawl, and even hosting their own events including bakes sales, psychic nights, golf events and much more, people from the local area have been doing everything within their power to give back and support people with cancer.

And there isn’t any doubt that haven't been getting stuck in - as they've only gone above and beyond to supersede the target by over £22,000.

It's the third time, that business leader, Sir Boyd Tunnock has set the Tunnock’s Caramel Wafer Match-Funding Challenge to donate to Maggie’s Lanarkshire - a charity which provides free practical and psychological support for people with cancer and their family and friends.

Lorrie Cameron, centre head at Maggie’s Lanarkshire said: "Maggie’s relies entirely on voluntary donations from individuals and companies to enable our professional team to be able to provide specialist cancer support, psychological support and benefits advice for everyone who needs it.

"By doubling every penny we receive in donations for the Caramel Wafer Matched Giving Challenge, we will be able to provide our unique support to twice as many people with cancer and their family and friends across Lanarkshire.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Sir Boyd said: “I’m so pleased to see that the kind people of Lanarkshire have thrown themselves behind this challenge and pulled out all the stops once again.

"We are very pleased to be able to support Maggie’s in this way through the past few difficult years, and we want to help them to continue to deliver their wonderful programme of support to everyone that needs it.”

Sandy Wilkie, chairman of the board for Maggie’s Lanarkshire,. added: “Once again the generosity of Sir Boyd and his family have warmed the hearts of so many people throughout Lanarkshire who have been inspired to go over and above for their local cancer support centre. We are overwhelmed by the community’s response and thank everyone who rose to the challenge.”
