Lanarkshire land could be turned into retail site under new proposals

A patch of vacant Lanarkshire land could be turned into a retail centre under new proposals.

A planning application by property company Crucible Developments has been submitted for grounds near Westburn Road and Grayline Avenue in Cambuslang which would see shops, a gym and takeaways on the site, near Newton train station.

15 units would be on the land, including the gym, three takeaways and two drive-throughs. The reminder would be made up of shops.

There would be a total of 130 parking spaces at the new development, with vehicle access through the nearby streets.

A number of locals have already responded to the plans, with nearly 40 people expressing support for the plans and a total of six objections so far.

Concerns raised include the environmental impact of the site and whether it will have a negative impact on nearby animals and wildlife, as well as concerns regarding if the number of shops and their opening hours would disturb people living in the homes around the area, particularly with regard to when stock deliveries might occur.

Questions have also been asked regarding added pollution with an increased number of bins being used, potentially attracting rats vermin.

The amount of added traffic the development would create with the junction between the two roundabouts in the area has also been raised.

Architecture company 3D Reid state in their plans that: "The proposed development will be in a prominent location, adjacent to Newton Railway Station and recent residential developments.

"Given the nature of the site and the nearby context, there is little in the locale to consider from an architectural perspective, with only residential developments to reference.

"As a result the proposals seek to minimise the extent of inactive façades whilst also ensuring that the development has positive relationship with the surrounding environment.

"The scale of units, primarily single storey with heights in keeping with adjacent residential properties, and the proposed materials, aim to integrate the retail development with the domestic fabric beyond, albeit with a clear architectural language to suit the commercial use."

Consultation with locals will continue until October 4, with a final determination on the application due on November 6.
