Lanarkshire karate club digs deep to help local food groups

Members of a Wishaw karate club have dug deep to help a number of local groups who help hard-up families.

Tokui Ryu Karate Club, based at Wishaw Sports Centre, together with the Saturday Circuit Class purchased food and personal hygiene products for several groups in Wishaw and Newmains.

Sandy Kilgour helped co-ordinate the food drive along with club Sensei Robert Frame.

Sandy told Lanarkshire Live: “Sensei Frame contacted me and suggested that we once again come together and try to inspire the people we train with.

“Teachers and staff at Coltness High, led by headteacher John McGilp, who is a great supporter of our work, volunteered their time which we are grateful.

“I approached my own work at Scotmid Co-operative and their community team provided us with vouchers to purchase both food and personal hygiene products.

“We have all come together to help make a difference by collecting and donating non-perishable food items and personal hygiene products for people who need support at this time.”

The items were donated to community groups Made4UinML2, Dallies Community Larder at Newmains United and the Live Well foodbank based at Coltness Memorial Church.

Sandy was delighted that despite the cost-of-living crisis members still took the time to donate to a worthy cause.

He added: “Sensei Frame and myself were the drop off points for the donations or our training friends very kindly brought it with them and I stored the products.

“We set a four week collection process in place, we then amalgamated them together and set them into categories so that it made the separation process easier for the foodbanks.

“I arranged the drop off for a Sunday morning and one of our Saturday circuit training colleagues Greg Nightingale brought a van to the collection point at my garden in Newmains and helped load, split and deliver the donations.

“Thanks so much to everyone who donated. Sometimes we all need a little help and none more than such a time as we are going though this cost of living crisis when people may need the support now more than ever.”
