Lanarkshire Karate Academy's Cumbrian Open showing delivers magnificent medal haul

Lanarkshire Karate Academy claimed a fantastic 45-medal haul at the Cumbrian Open Championships in Penrith over the weekend.

The Airdrie-based club travelled south full of high hopes their youngsters would do them proud – and they did just that with an outstanding performance that delivered 15 gold medals, eight silver prizes and 22 bronze awards.

Delighted Sensei Chantelle Allan said: “We had some very nice results and, what a fantastic medal haul.

“Huge congratulations to all medal winners and all competitors who took part, we are so proud of your efforts.

“Also, well done and thank you to all of our supportive parents and guardians for making the journey and cheering the team on.

“It was a brilliant day for team LKA.”

The individual results for the club were as follows:

GOLD: Keir McGeachy - Individual Kumite, Harrison Carty - Individual Kata, Emmie McEwan - Individual Kumite, Sebastian Magilton - Individual Kumite, Heather Mackay - Individual Kata, Eva Cochrane - Individual Kumite, Amelia Harvie - Individual Kata, Julie Wiegand - Individual Kata, Heather Mackay - Individual Kumite.

There were also four golds in team kumite, one in team kata and one in pairs kata.

SILVER: Amaria Awan - Individual Kumite, Harrison Carty - Kickmaster, Sebastian Magilton - Individual Kata, Mila McGowan - Individual Kumite, Julie Wiegand - Individual Kumite.

Two kata pairs silver medals were also awarded along with team kumite.

BRONZE: Luke Ryder - Individual Kumite, Tyler Gibson - Individual Kumite, Lewis Logue - Individual Kumite, Jodi Warwick - Individual Kumite, Evan McNab - Individual Kata, Keir McDonald - Individual Kata, Weronika Sajewska - Individual Kata, Jayden Warwick - Individual Kata , Bartek Sajewski - Individual Kata , Reece Taylor - Individual Kata, Keir McGeachy - Kickmaster, Lewis Ferguson - Kickmaster, Jayden Warwick - Individual Kumite, Austin Docherty - Individual Kumite, Weronika Sajewska - Individual Kumite.

The club also won three bronze in pairs kata, three in team kumite and one in team kata.

LKA’s success comes off the back of a recent seminar with Kumite great Wayne Otto.

A nine-time world and European champion, the former England national coach gave an informative session to the kids in Stirling earlier this month.
