Lanarkshire girl gang 'harassed and laughed at' man with Down's syndrome in the street

A man with Down's syndrome is heartbroken after a gang of schoolgirls mocked and laughed at him in the street.

The cruel group turned on Amy Ellis' Uncle John after he refused to buy them vapes from shop.

Now she says the incident has shattered his confidence and he no longer wants to go out alone, the Daily Record reports.

John was on Hamilton Road, Bellshill on Tuesday when the girls first approached him asking if he would buy them items from nearby Fair Price store.

They turned on him when he said no, "harassing, making fun of him and laughing" in the street.

John called Amy while the incident was unfolding and hearing what what was being said she talked him through what to do.

Amy contacted police, who told her "no criminality had taken place".

In a post on Facebook, she explained: "He said no and they continued to harass him, laughing at him and make fun of him. John was smart enough to phone me so I could hear them.

"I've contacted the police but as 'no criminal activity took place' nothing can be done about it.

"He was absolutely heartbroken at the girls 'laughing' at him and his confidence to go out alone has been shattered."

"I can't believe there were a group of girls who could be so cruel to a vulnerable person and deliberately try and take advantage of him."
