Lanarkshire first aid volunteer honoured for 30 years of service

A St Andrew’s First Aid Company Commandant from Lanarkshire has been awarded a special commendation at a prestigious awards ceremony.

Joe Mulholland, Company Commandant for the Rutherglen Corps company, has volunteered with St Andrew’s First Aid, Scotland’s only dedicated first aid charity, for 30 years.

Last week Joe was presented with the Douglas Bremner Special Commendation Award at the Scottish First Aid Awards, with the honour which recognising an individual who has carried out outstanding acts of first aid.

In his role as Company Commandant, Joe is responsible for the day to day running of the company and the welfare of the volunteers.

He regularly supports other companies across Glasgow and Ayrshire and is a highly regarded member within the wider volunteering community.

Described by the company’s members as ‘a people’s person’, Joe takes enormous pride in his volunteering work and dedicates much of his time to training and providing support to the volunteers he works alongside with a strong focus on welfare and development.

Upon receiving the Douglas Bremner Special Commendation Award, Joe said: “I’m honoured to receive the award.

"I’ve been committed to my role as a volunteer at St Andrew’s First Aid for 30 years and I’m glad to see my efforts have helped to provide assistance and training on the importance of First Aid.”

Throughout the pandemic, Joe ensured his company was able to overcome challenges they faced by keeping a positive attitude and ensuring regular communication was made within their community.

He arranged regular zoom meetings and provided frequent check ins and updates with volunteers.

Stuart Callison, chief executive of St Andrew’s First Aid, added: “Joe is a fantastic role model and ambassador for St Andrew’s First Aid. His commitment which spans three decades, shows a strong passion for the work we do and the people we work with.

“Joe is held in high regard by everyone who knows him, and those who have the pleasure of volunteering alongside him regularly report on his supportive, positive and encouraging attitude.

“We’re thrilled to present Joe with this award, as a reflection of his dedication and support to St Andrew’s First Aid.”

The award is named after Dr Douglas Bremner, who was associated with St Andrew’s First Aid for over 40 years, the last 25 of which he served as a Trustee.

Close to 400 people attended the St Andrew’s First Aid Scottish First Aid Awards which were held at Radisson Blu on Cambridge Street in Glasgow and hosted by Jane McCarry, also known as Isa from Still Game.

More nominations than ever before were received (over 60), recognising first aid heroes across 12 categories.
