Lanarkshire firefighters to hold charity car wash for Ukraine appeal

East Kilbride’s firefighters will be on hand to hose down your motor in return for a donation to the Ukraine appeal.

Their popular charity car wash takes place next month and this year the chosen cause had to be helping Ukranian people devastated by the deadly Russian invasion.

White Watch Commander David Smith told Lanarkshire Live : "We usually get involved in various station charity events throughout the year.

"After witnessing the plight of the Ukrainian people on the news it was proposed that we could do something to help raise funds.

"As we run an annual car wash it was suggested we could do one, and with the help of the local community, raise some money with the proceeds going to this worthwhile cause."

The car wash will be held on Saturday, May 7 from 10am to 3pm.

Meanwhile, the station's annual plant sale is set to return for the first time in two years since the COVID pandemic.

Tens of thousands of pounds has been raised by East Kilbride Fire Station over the years which has seen people flock to the sale.

All proceeds will go to the National Fire Fighters Charity (formerly the Fire Service National Benevolent Fund) and several local charities.

Running for over 30 years, the event attracts hundreds of gardeners every year and has a wide selection of bedding plants, shrubs and baskets.

On the day there will be an opportunity for members of the public to obtain fire safety advice from the town’s firefighters and the kids can hop on board a fire engine.

There will also be a tombola with prizes donated from local companies.

The fire station is now accepting applications from local charities who could benefit from the sale.

Registered charities should apply in writing or email to: CC Matthew Smith, East Kilbride Fire Station, 1 Andrew Street, G74 1AD.

The plant sale runs on May 21 from 9am till 4pm.
