Lanarkshire energy storage facility given the green light

South Lanarkshire councillors have given an energy storage unit in East Kilbride the go-ahead.

Elected members at the planning committee meeting on Tuesday (August 16) approved plans to develop a battery storage facility at Highflat Farm near the town.

The approved plans will allow for a Battery Energy Storage System which will store electricity and will be made up of 27 battery storage containers along with ancillary infrastructure, substation, access road, three metre high fencing, CCTV and lighting.

The proposed battery takes in generated electricity when there is a surplus and stores it until there is a demand for electricity which can be released to meet the demand.

The site will be secure and equipment to allow for 24-hour monitoring of batteries remotely will be included. There will be no full-time staff.

Access is to be taken directly off Highflat Road, and the proposed battery is to have a storage capacity of approximately 49 megawatts

There will also be fire safety measures, including an early warning system for monitoring potential gas build up.

Statutory neighbourhood notification was undertaken and no letters of representation were received.

A similar application was approved in February in Rutherglen.
