Lanarkshire drivers wake to flooding as torrential rain batters the county

Lanarkshire has been battered by torrential rain overnight and this morning with some drivers caught out by the treacherous conditions.

In Cambuslang's Gilbertfield Road, a driver found themselves in deep water after ignoring a road closure.

The picture posted online shows a car stranded with the road impassable and the warning: "Don't ignore the road closed for Gilbertfield Road or you will be in the same position as this driver".

It comes as much of Lanarkshire gets battered from heavy rain today.

That has resulted in a yellow warning for heavy rain being put in place in much of the central belt.

Weather experts say it comes as much of Scotland feels the after effects of the devastating bomb cyclone causing havoc in America over the Christmas period.

Now motorists have been warned of potentially difficult driving conditions and delays or cancellations to train and bus services.

Police Scotland said there is a high risk of disruption and urged people to plan ahead and drive to the conditions if they have to travel.

Elsewhere parts of Strathaven saw flooding with one local posting "Massive flood on Hamilton Road, shortly before Limekilnburn. On the Strathaven side. Avoid."

Another wrote: "Just back to Kirkmuirhill from EK. Bad flooding everywhere. Driveable with extreme care."

And a resident also wrote: "A lot of flooding between Drumclog and Strathaven too."

South Lanarkshire Council's head of roads, Colin Park, told Lanarkshire Live: “Overnight there has been significant rainfall and we are responding to multiple flooding incidents and road closures across our network.

"Rainfall is forecast to ease this afternoon; however flooding issues are likely to continue all day.

"Our teams are continuing to monitor the situation and respond to these incidents as required.”
