Lanarkshire driver cleared of deliberately hitting and injuring ex-partner's mum and dad

A driver has been cleared of deliberately hitting and injuring his former partner’s mum and dad.

Dean Hill, 23, was accused of assaulting the man and woman to the danger of their lives outside their home on Muirhouse Road, Motherwell.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard that the woman suffered a serious ankle injury and the male victim was knocked unconscious when they were struck by a grey Audi on July 9 last year.

A witness told the court she feared her dad had been killed by the reversing car.

However, the jury returned not proven verdicts after the witness said she didn’t believe Hill, described as a prisoner, had acted deliberately.

Hill’s brother Ryan, 30, of Woodside Crescent, Newmains, was jailed for five months. He was convicted of acting in a threatening or abusive manner.

The court heard the brothers drove to the home of the witnesses parents and an argument started.

She wept as she told prosecutor Paul Jamieson: “Dean reversed and mounted the kerb.

"He hit my mum who was on the pavement and she went under the car.

“She was screaming. She was bleeding and her ankle was a mess.

“I know he didn’t mean it because when I saw his face he was scared.”

The witness said Hill drove off and she and her dad ran after the car.

She added: “He seemed to realise he had gone without Ryan so reversed the car to get him.

“The car then hit my dad. Dean just looked at me. I thought my dad was dead.

“He was on the ground and was bleeding from the head. He was unconscious for 20 minutes until the ambulance came.

“Dad was lying in the middle of the road and someone put him in the recovery position.

“Ryan jumped into the car and Dean drove up Barons Road.”
