Lanarkshire drag queen set to perform in his home town for the very first time

One of Britain's best loved drag queens is set to perform his highly acclaimed and "wickedly comical female impersonation cabaret showcase" in his home town of Airdrie for the very first time.

Ken Dee has treated audiences to his show across Europe and the UK for more than 43 years - before the start of the RuPaul's Drag Race era.

Television and theatre star Ken was asked to perform on stage at Caldervale High in his home town a couple of years ago to help the school mark its 50th anniversary but the show was cancelled due to the pandemic.

But the colourful character is finally set to wow his close to home fans with a wonderful night of entertainment in the Moy Hall Airdrie Service Club on May 20.

Ken told Lanarkshire Live : "After I had to cancel the event at Caldervale High, I decided to bring my show to my home town for the very first time.

"I left Airdrie in 1978, although I do return for a visit every year as I still have family in the town.

The 'Mr Ken Dee in Cabaret' show bolts from the gate so fast you have to sit forward in your seat to take it all in as the audience is treated to a dazzling parade of well-known female icons amazingly recreated and brought to the stage in lightning quick succession.

"I effortlessly transforms from one character to another in this cavalcade of costume and song.

"My tributes and female impersonations form part of this cabaret extravaganza which also features audience inspired stand-up comedy. In this respect, no two shows are ever the same."

Ken was born in Airdrie, where he started his career as a keyboard player in a band.

Having moved to Bournemouth in 1978, he became a full-time entertainer and has worked for more than 40 years on the cabaret circuit.

Ken has worked as a full-time drama coach and teacher and while working in education, has directed many plays and musical including Grease , Chicago and The Pirates of Penzance .

He has also appeared in several television productions, such as The Ruth Rendall Mysteries, EastEnders , Casualty and Doctor Who .

Ken's show at the Moy Hall Airdrie Service Club, which includes an appearance by special guest Diane James, takes place on Friday, May 20; doors open at 7.30pm for an 8.30pm start.

Tickets are priced £10 and reservations can be made by calling 07807 938 774.
