Lanarkshire dog rescue centre helps to support Ukraine with donations

A Rutherglen pet rescue centre is helping to deliver donations to the Ukraine border.

Rutherglen Rescue is working alongside Hounds 2 You and several volunteers to take donations to the Romania / Ukraine border this week.

The pet rescue uses the van to transport dogs from Spain to the UK but decided to go on a run to Ukraine to help the thousands of refugees fleeing the war.

Carolyn Blackshaw told Lanarkshire Live : “It was originally my transporter Jane’s idea and it’s just grown from there.

“We have a van that lives between Spain and London and we usually use it for our dog rescues but decided to try and get it filled up with supplies that the refugees will need.

“We have an Amazon 'wish list' set up for both human and dog items, for things like first aid kits, sleeping bags, and glucose drinks for them.

“All the Amazon items are sent down to London and are then packed and loaded into the van and two of our volunteers are going to start driving there on Thursday.”

The parcels arrive in London with another volunteer, Judith Apter, who gets them ready to be loaded into the van.

Carolyn added: “They’re going to go under the Eurotunnel and drive through France and other bordering countries and load off the stuff and help where they can.

“It’s around a 26-hour drive there.

“A lot of people that started donating were people who originally had rehomed dogs from me and, well, Jane, she knew a lot of people.

“We started the wish list on Saturday and had stuff by Sunday evening.

“We started small and then began adding other items. It just grew arms and legs and everyone stood up and said ‘I’ll do it.”

The two drivers, Rory Sasse and Charlotte Brown, raised the £600 needed for the fuel and as well as the cost of the Eurotunnel.

Carolyn is a nurse and and hopes to continue to help Ukraine in any way she can.

She added: “We need to see how this goes - and the run, we might need some support.

"What the drivers do, they’ll take turns, they’ll pack everything in and take turns and help people at the border if needed.”
