Lanarkshire dancer to host 'burlesque-athon' for women's aid charity

A Holytown burlesque dance instructor Adelle Barrett will put her best foot forward later this year as she tries to raise money for charity.

Adelle, who goes by the name Poppy Chesty, will choreograph two groups of dancers - the Belles and Petals - in an epic six-hour challenge.

The 32-year-old was inspired to start her own burlesque chair group over three years ago after she was introduced to the dance style at a class in Bellshill.

Now her two thriving groups are gearing up for their big challenge in October in support of a Lanarkshire-based charity - Monklands Women’s Aid.

Adelle told Lanarkshire Live : “I take two classes and it’s all about female empowerment and body confidence.

"I thought this would be a great team building activity and all the ladies come together and get excited about things like this.

“I think I’ve set my initial target as £500, but we are hoping it will go over that. Anything we can raise for the charity I will be happy with.”

Adelle and her students meet at Dance City in Airdrie and chose Monklands Women’s Aid who recently lost their funding.

She told us: “We have got a gofundme page set up and the girls have all their sponsor forms set up.

"It’s on a theme of ‘badass women’. They have to dress up as a villain, superhero or anyone famous; anyone they deem to be badass.

“My ladies, and gent, are all amazing and so encouraging towards one another, I know they will smash this sponsored event.

"I just want to give them the recognition they desire for the confidence they've gained themselves and the confidence they've helped build in others.

"When a group of women get together there's nothing more powerful.”

The burlesque-athon will be held at the 203 Club in Clark Street, Airdrie on October 22, from 9.30am to 5pm.
