A thief produced a knife and told shop staff who had cornered him 'don't make me use it'.
Thomas Talent had stolen goods worth nearly £2000 from Hamilton stores.
The town's sheriff court heard staff from the Ink Spot went looking for him after he helped himself to toys valued at £531.
Talent also stole items worth £875 from Boots as well as making off with a £503 haul from JD Sports.
The 32-year-old admitted charges of shoplifting, threatening or abusive behaviour and possessing a knife on September 25 last year.
Alice Carey, prosecuting, said two Ink Spot employees located Talent at the nearby Asda.
They noticed he had a knife and informed security guards there.
Talent began to shout and swear when challenged and, referring to the Stanley blade he was carrying, said 'don't make me use this'.
Police officers happened to be in Asda and when they confronted Talent he shouted abuse at them, but he was eventually arrested.
Defence agent Chris Devine said his client has long term addiction issues and difficulties with his mental health.
The latest incidents happened shortly after his release from prison.
Devine stated: "He was released without any family or professional support and was distressed by that.
"He was effectively homeless and had little by way of money."
Talent has been in custody since his arrest more than a year ago.
Sheriff Colin Dunipace deferred sentence until next month to see if an alternative to further time in prison is appropriate.
He told the accused: "I'm making no promises, but you've had plenty of custodial sentences and I'm not sure they have achieved a great deal.
"You'll remain in custody meantime."
