Lanarkshire council teams up with other local authorities to launch positive behaviour working group

South Lanarkshire Council, along with five other local authorities, have agreed to launch a work group to promote positive behaviour.

The Clyde Valley Learning and Development joint committee – which includes East Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire and South Lanarkshire – approved the launch of the group at Monday's meeting (February 21).

The ‘promoting positive’ programme has been used across the Clyde Valley Group for over eight years, with the first pilot running in June 2013.

The programme is now delivered across the Clyde Valley Group as well as East and West Dunbartonshire Councils.

The programme is used mostly in social care settings but has been expanding into education and homelessness services.

At the meeting, it was proposed that a core group should be established to agree on the scope of the review of the programme and set a timeline for when work should be completed.

Chairwoman of the steering group, Gill Bhatti, said: “I just wanted to comment that promoting positive behaviour has been with us for a while.

“It is a sensitive subject and it deals with a group who are often troubled and I think for the staff who are involved in that area it’s really important that promoting positive behaviour is reviewed regularly and has got the highest standards of governance to make sure that everybody who is involved in that is protected and for that reason I can welcome what is being proposed.”

The group will commence work at the start of next month to meet specific milestones and to review the programme, with duties being carried out throughout the rest of the year.

The review conducted by the group would consider the changes in social work and social care practice, practice research, national and local enquiries into services.

Areas the review will address include the overall approach of the programme, the principles of safe practice, positive approaches to care, use of physical intervention and methods of delivery with the full terms will be agreed by the core group.
