Lanarkshire council clarify vaping in school toilets concern after complaints

South Lanarkshire Council has clarified that pupils vaping is not the reason why a school has locked their toilets during class time.

Last week we told how concerns had been raised regarding Cathkin High school, in Cambuslang, locking the majority of their communal toilets throughout classes.

Parents told us the policy was causing embarrassment for pupils, particularly girls who were on their periods.

The local authority stated that the school's 15 accessible toilets remained in use while the communal areas were closed.

However, they have issued a further statement saying the issue was not to do with pupils vaping, as had been previously claimed.

The council's head of education, Anne Donaldson, told Lanarkshire Live : "The toilets at Cathkin High School are not closed because of pupils vaping.

"There are accessible toilets open on every floor of the school that pupils can use during class times, and our toilets in the communal ‘street’ area are open at breaks and lunch.

"All toilets (except the boys’ toilet in the street) are fully stocked with period products and pupils are not prevented from using the toilet during class but are encouraged to do so at break and lunch times to minimise time out of class.

"The street toilets are monitored during breaks and lunch times to ensure they remain clean and tidy and remain an accessible and uncrowded place for all pupils to use.

"The school is not aware of any pupil raising a complaint recently regarding this."

Lanarkshire Live asked SLC what the reasoning was for keeping the toilets locked if the problem was not vaping, but they have yet to respond.
