Lanarkshire community shop's fury at council over leaky roof and plumbing problems

A Rutherglen community shop has lashed out at the Council due to the length of time taken to fix major building problems.

Run by non-profit organisation Rain or Shine, the community shop helps those struggling financially.

However, they have been battling a burst pipe, a mouldy and leaking roof, and plumbing issues with the toilet for months now.

And they say the council have done nothing to help.

A spokeswoman for the shop told Lanarkshire Live: “The roof has been leaking for a while.

"We were assured when we moved in that it was fixed, something was sprayed on it to deal with the issue - but then the last few weeks it began to again. Now the problem has spread throughout the full shop.

“The last two tenants said that the roof was an issue for them as well.”

The organisation have contacted several of their local MSPs and councillors for help with the problem, but to no avail.

The spokeswoman added: “Every time we have a problem with the toilet we have to close.

"That means we losing business that we really cannot afford to be losing. I feel like the council is trying to fix these problems with a plaster and they never seem to fully get fixed.

“We had someone come out the other day to look at the roof and he brought his ladders - once he got here he said he had no one to hold the ladder and would have to come back.

“The roof has black mould on it and we can’t do any window displays because of it, half of our stock went in the bin.”

Working with Burnside Tesco to give out free fruit, distribute nappies and sanitary products for those who need them, the shop has been a lifeline for many in the community.

The shop work in partnership with East Kilbride Sea cadets and the local foodbank to help the cadets gain there Duke of Edinburgh award.

The source told us: "I'm at the point of looking for new premises because I feel like these issues aren’t getting fixed.

“We don’t bring in a huge amount of money. The money we do bring in is for people in the community."

The organisation has also posted about the leaks on their Facebook page.

One such person told the shop that it had been previously used as the housing association from 1980 to 1986.

She said it constantly had leaks with rain coming into it and the staff needed bins to catch the water.

SNP Councillors Carol Nugent and Janine Calikes have both been in contact with the organisation and the council to help.

Councillor Calikes told Lanarkshire Live: "On being contacted by Rain or Shine on Tuesday morning, I immediately raised the matter with the council and I am advised that contractors were on site late afternoon on the same day to carry out inspections.

"The gutters were cleared but further repairs are required which the council assure me will be undertaken as soon as the weather allows for this to happen.

"I will continue to liaise with both the council and Rain or Shine and I will press for these repairs to be completed in good time to allow this vital community project, which is so valued in Rutherglen, to get back to supporting local families."

A spokesman for SLC said contractors have been on site this week, identifying the cause of the problems to be the result of "choked downpipes and blocked gutters".

the spokesman added: “The gutters and downpipes have now been cleared and flashing repairs are to be undertaken to the roof to further prevent any water ingress as soon as weather permits.”
