Lanarkshire community garden shortlisted for award

Eastfield community centre is on a mission to establish a community garden for locals to enjoy.

The centre in Cambuslang is currently on the shortlist for a £500 prize provided by Dobbies garden centre as part of their Helping Your Community Grow initiative.

The winning project will then receive advice, products, and support from the local Dobbies’ team.

Carol Loch, Eastfield community secretary told Lanarkshire Live: “We are trying to establish a community garden as well as run our Chatty Crafters every Tuesday afternoon, but I would like to be able to establish a community garden and a place for the community to enjoy nature surrounded by flowers and a peaceful atmosphere.

“I filled in the application on the Dobbies website and told them about our intention of creating a community garden for people to call their own and I was delighted when Dobbies told me that we had been shortlisted.

“We were advised to get others to vote online to increase our chance of winning.

“If we win the money will be spent on vegetables, flowers, herbs, sensory plants, and tools. We’re also part of The Beeline Project set up by Grow 73 and have two of their planets in the grounds with pollinators to nurture the bees.”

Dobbies’ CEO, Graeme Jenkins, added: “Helping Your Community Grow is a really popular initiative in Clyde Valley and we’ve seen a great response from community groups and projects looking to make a difference to their local area. It’s been positive to see so many projects place importance on sustainability and environmentally-friendly products.

“Now the community voting gets underway and we’re looking forward to seeing which projects receive our support.”

You can vote for the community garden via the Dobbies website and select Braehead as the local store and place your vote.
