Lanarkshire community council seeks new members to avoid shutting down

A Lanarkshire community council has warned they could struggle to keep going unless more new members sign up.

Cambuslang Community Council have been involved with a host of projects aimed at benefiting the area in recent years, including a long-running campaign that resulted in the BankHub being opened on the Main Street of the town.

However, projects such as that could be affected as the group have seen their members drop.

The community council's chair John Bachtler told Lanarkshire Live: "We have been a bit unfortunate over the past few years - three members have passed away, one has just moved outside the area, three have family members who are unwell and needing support, and one of the group is now 81.

"Having spoken to a few people, I think we'll be okay, so we aren't panicking just yet. However we do need new members, or at some point the community council, and the projects we are involved in running, will have to stop. If anyone can spare some time to make the town better then we would love to hear from them."

The community council's other projects in recent years include regular efforts to improve the Main Street and regenerate the town centre, the ongoing Cambuslang Cycling project and establishing a remembrance garden in the area.

Rutherglen MSP Clare Haughey has called on locals to get involved in what she believes is an important part of the region, and has also suggested Burnside residents sign up to their community council, who are also needing new members.

She said: "Community councils are vital parts of local democracy and they work they do can be transformational locally.

"Cambuslang Community Council have, for example, been behind projects like the BankHub and their campaigning has brought a new park and ride to Bridge Street.

"Burnside Community Council has also been involved in so many things over the years – from their campaigning against bank closures to their work with Burnside in Bloom adding colour across the area.

"It is the volunteers and activists that make our local community councils what they are and so if you are interested in joining your local one, then I’d strongly recommend you do so."
