Lanarkshire church throws huge street party for jubilee

Piper John Paton was delighted to mark the Queen’s reign during the last 70 years by playing outside Rutherglen West and Wardlawhill Church last week.

The celebration continued with the lighting of their Jubilee Beacon and the planting of a tree by the leaders and boys from cubs and boys’ brigade from the local community.

The celebrations were rounded off with a Platinum Jubilee Street Party on Western Avenue.

Isabelle Tennent, of the church, said: “This surpassed all expectations with over 120 celebrating with us.

“As our Queen has cared and shared her life with us, we, in her honour reached out to the community to join with us to honour this historic occasion.

“And join they did. We shared food and chat, danced in the street and neighbour met neighbour.

“We take this opportunity to thank all who attended, our wonderful team who served, our piper John Paton, our Local councillors, Robert Brown and Margaret Cowie who committed time to spend the day celebrating with us and to the generous donations from local businesses, Harrison Scott, RL Engineers. PK Foods, The 20 Club, Warburton’s, Asda and of course from the members of W & W, who gave so generously.

“But to all who have supported our events thanks to you.”
