Lanarkshire chippy on Britain's Top Takeaways but judges aren't sure about Scots dishes

A takeaway just outside Glasgow has joined the rest of the shoal to compete for the title of Britain's Top Takeaway on BBC Two.

Hugh and William, of Tony's Chippy in Coatbridge's Shawhead, appeared on the brand new cookery competition show on Monday night to show off Scotland's good old fashioned fish and chips.

Hugh explained his love for chippies began when he was young, as he began working in a fish and chip shop when he was just 14 years old.

William noted that freshness is key when it comes to cooking the best fish supper.

He said: "We get our fish fresh from Peterhead each morning, and it is all cooked that day. That is the key to perfection - freshness is key when it comes to our food."

However, the Williams family weren't too impressed with Hugh and William's take on a traditional fish supper - one special fish, covered in breadcrumbs, and one normal battered haddock.

They were scored two for their first dish from judges Leah and Liam, and a solitary one from the Williams family.

After this, couple Royston and Nick ordered the Spanish fritters from Tony's Chippy, and the Spencer family ordered the same dish.

The Spanish fritters include Spanish fritters, sandwiching a slice of haddock in between, turning the dish into more of a fishcake.

In this round, they scored a 3 from Royston and Nick, and a 2 from the Spencer family, bringing their score to a more respectable score of 7.

They were currently sitting last - but any-fin can happen!

After, veggie pensioners Keith and Linda Bailey ordered a pea fritter and the secret menu item from the Lanarkshire duo.

Bonus judges Muss Side Boxing Club put in a massive order of two versions of every dish on the menu, which meant that Hugh and William could clamber from bottom place if they impressed the fitness fanatics.

The boxing club round was worth bonus points - but could the local team do it? Well, they had an ace up their sleeve - a deep fried chip butty with curry sauce!

I mean, have you ever heard anything more Scottish?

Still, it was not positively received by Linda - but she did keep an open mind while trying, and the scores were kept a secret.

Muss Side Boxing Club scored Tony's Chippy the maximum point value of 10 - meaning that they climbed the points chart drastically, but not the leader board.

They ended in fifth place, only two points behind fourth!

It was anyone's to win after the Boxing Club's gift of double points.

Sadly, this meant that Hugh and William had to bow out, but they for sure did Scotland proud with their efforts.

And some Twitter users who were not as familiar with how Scots do things up here took to the social media application to voice their opinions.

One tweet read: "Deep fried Bap???? #BBC2 #BritainsTopTakeaway"

Another Twitter user joked about the vegetarian option available at Tony's, writing: "The veggie option at our chippy is mushy peas with mushy peas on the side. #britainstoptakeaway #toptakeaway"

Britain's Top Takeaway continues next week, with Pizza night coming thick and fast like dough on Monday, May 16 at 8pm on BBC Two.
