Lanarkshire charity seek volunteer gardeners to help refurbish their garden

An Airdrie-based charity that support carers and people with neurological conditions is on the lookout for green fingered volunteers.

Parkinson’s self help group are looking for people to help them with the refurbishment of their garden

The group has a number of service, such as peer support groups on Tuesdays and Thursdays - for people with neurological conditions, where staff are present - and on Mondays for carers.

Anne Fitzpatrick, centre co-ordinator for the group, told Lanarkshire Live : “We support anyone with a neurological condition.

"We also operate a variety of activities such as music and movement and a bit of tai chi and we have a big garden space at the rear of the building which we are trying to refurbish.

“Some of our members are a bit cautious about coming inside at the moment and we are hoping to achieve a space for members to meet up with others and our aim is to open it up to other small community groups in the area.

“We are also intending to take some of the activities that we are doing inside to the outside.”

The funding for the project has primarily come from Community Solutions, part of the Voluntary Action North Lanarkshire (VANL) organisation which has awarded the group with around £2000 to achieve its goals.

Anne told us: “We were delighted to receive the funding and we also got funding from the local activity fund.

“We have also applied for funding for our chefs to produce plant-based meals and taster sessions and for the food to be grown in our garden area.

“The main thing is for us to get the word out there and for people to know that it’s open to all carers and people with neurological conditions.

“It’s a wonderful resource and it would be a shame if people could not access it because they didn’t know about it.”
