Lanarkshire care home shows flower power as they win national gardening contest

A Lanarkshire care home celebrated a blooming great success recently after scooping a prize in a nationwide gardening competition.

Rutherglen Care Home, with the help of some very creative residents, entered the 'Advinia in Bloom' competition being run by the care home provider, and won in the 'Queen's Jubilee Garden' category.

The home's activity coordinators had called a residents meeting to decide and plan their entry and they came up with the novel idea of a Queen of Hearts/Alice in Wonderland theme, which proved strong enough to impress the judges and take top honours from out of 36 different entries.

Maureen Thomson, the care home's activity coordinator, told Lanarkshire Live: "We didn't expect to win but when we found out it made all the hard work worthwhile.

"We recycled old tins from the kitchen and painted and potted them with bright flowers, and then we designed and coloured bunting and decorations.

"We also painted some old tea pots to use for our Mad Hatters Tea Party.

"It took weeks of hard work spent planting and preparing the gardens and we even managed to get a croquet set and had great fun playing on the lawn."

Care home resident Morag Harper, 83, was among those taking part in the work, and said she was overwhelmed when care home staff told her that they had won the competition.

She added: "It's amazing news and I'm just so so happy that we won."

It continues a winning run for the care home, as last year they lifted the prize for Best Wildlife Garden in the same contest.
