Lanarkshire care home closes majority of units to ensure 'viable' future

Over half of the units in a prominent Lanarkshire care home are currently sitting unused.

Bosses at Rutherglen Care Home say they have been forced to close five of eight units as part of a reconfiguration of the premises aimed at securing it's future.

The news comes as new stats suggest a number of care homes are being faced with closure across Scotland, while a number of Scottish hospitals struggle with overcrowding.

Yet the majority of spaces at the Rodger Drive premises - run by Advina Healthcare - are not being used at all.

A source who contacted Lanarkshire Live and asked to remain anonymous, said: "That's up to five units there now that just aren't being used for anything.

"Nothing is being done with them and it seems a waste given all the problems you're hearing about with space in hospitals.

"You wonder about the future of the care home itself."

Care home bosses say the move has been made to deliver more personalised care to those currently being looked after there.

A spokeswoman for Advina told us: "The safety and wellbeing of our residents is our highest priority, and we will always take steps to ensure they receive the very best personalised care.

"We have taken the decision to reconfigure Rutherglen. This decision will allow our dedicated care teams to deliver the very best care to our residents in the safest and most effective manner and ensure the long-term viability of the home."

The care home did not provide any further details on the reconfiguration plans.

As of summer 2021, over 100 people were being cared for there.

The news came as Donald Macaskill, chief executive of Scottish Care, claimed on television that 40 per cent of Scotland's 800 private care homes were in danger of closure.

He told BBC’s Sunday Show that rising energy bills and a staffing crisis were contributing to a bleak period for the sector.

He added: "We cannot allow in the midst of the current crisis, the quality care and provision of older people to be sacrificed simply because people are not attending to the real issues that are facing the sector."

Scottish Care is the body that represents the interests of private care home owners.

Mr Macaskill also stated that smaller family run businesses, as opposed to companies like Advinia, were most in danger, but that problems were being faced across the entire sector.
