Lanarkshire cancer care service receives vital funding from Tesco community vote

A charity that provides free car travel for cancer patients has been awarded vital funding from two Tesco stores.

Lanarkshire Cancer Care Trust is a volunteer driver service for people all across the region who need to get to appointments for their treatment.

The service has been running for over 20 years and is based in an office in Wishaw.

They were recently awarded funding from the Tesco Community Grant. This is a scheme where customers can vote for which charity they feel is most deserving of funding, by using coupons they are given at the checkout.

Customers chose LCCT by voting for them in the Wishaw and Coltness Tesco stores.

The money awarded will go towards paying for fuel for the cars of the volunteers.

Development and fundraising officer, Frank Roy, was delighted that LCCT was chosen for the community funding.

He told Lanarkshire Live: "We have always had a great relationship with the local Tesco and when we heard about this we asked if we were able to be included.

"At the checkout, people are given tokens to go and vote for which charity they would like to see receive funding. There is a choice of three local charities.

"We were so happy to find out that customers decided we were most worthy of the grant. The grant was for £1500 which is vital to a charity like us.

"The money will pay directly for fuel for our volunteer drivers who take patients to and from their cancer treatment appointments.

"We have over 100 drivers and the average cost annually to fund this is over £150,000.

"We are always looking for new drivers to volunteer with us too, so if you can spare some time each week to help please get in touch."

You can find more information on the service on their Facebook, or by visiting their website.
