Lanarkshire cadet earns his stripes and is now giving back to the battalion

After four years spent as an Army Cadet, an Overtown man has earned his stripes and been promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Liam Murray, 20, was recently presented with his new rank by Major Alan Long at Newmains Army Cadets base, following the Company Commander’s inspection of the unit.

The former Clyde Valley High pupil had been working towards the promotion for the previous 18 months with a dedicated training wing team based alongside other new Cadet Force Adult Volunteers (CFAVs).

He was given a range of instruction on basic military skills including, drill; fieldcraft; navigation; and first, aid as well as covering a comprehensive safeguarding course and health and safety policy.

Newmains Army Cadets are part of the Glasgow and Lanarkshire Army Cadet Force Battalion.

Following the completion of the probationary courses, and passing them all, Sergeant Murray is now looking forward to using the military skills and knowledge he has gained to give something back to Newmains Army Cadets and the battalion he credits for much of his own achievements and personal development.

After undergoing the package of intensive training at the battalion’s headquarters in Glasgow he attended a week long Advanced Induction Course at Barry Buddon training Camp near Dundee with the Cadet Training Team, a Regular Army unit who train all CFAVs prior to completion of their probationary periods.

While there, Liam worked alongside other CFAVs from across the seven other battalions in Scotland and produced two very high quality lessons which were assessed by regular soldiers, and also participated in a 24-hour fieldcraft exercise.

Having now been promoted to Sergeant, Liam will now be looking to further his experience by attending a range of courses with other new CFAVs from across the UK.

With ambitions for a career as a police officer he believes the experience he has gained will also stand him in good stead for that bid.

Officer Commanding, Amiens Company, Major Alan Long said:“I’m delighted with the continued dedication Liam has shown to the Army Cadet Force, and that he wants to give back to the organisation. His promotion is well deserved upon completion of his initial training and probationary period.”
