Lanarkshire business launches search for little brother to 'world's largest spud' found in New Zealand

Spud giants Albert Bartlett are on a mission to track down #DougsLittleBro after the 'world’s largest spud' was discovered.

Colin Craig-Brown, from Hamilton, New Zealand, found the huge 7.9kg potato in his vegetable garden last August, which went on to become a local celebrity in its hometown.

He even put a hat on the potato, put him on Facebook and built a small cart to wheel him around in.

Doug went viral after Craig appeared on This Morning for the gigantic potato’s television debut in the UK.

The hilarious interview left Phil Schofield and Rochelle Humes in stitches with Lanarkshire man Alex Bartlett appearing alongside Colin in the segment to chat all things potatoes.

Now the Airdrie-based potato brand have launched their #Dougslittlebro to dig up the spud's sibling.

The team there say they have a hunch there’s a British version of the gigantic tattie kicking about and are determined to unearth it, launching the search to find 'little Dougie'.

Michael Jarvis, head of marketing at Albert Bartlett, said: “New Zealand grown potatoes are spectacular we’re sure, but nothing beats a good old British spud.

"It’s fascinating to think there’s a 7.9kg potato out there in the world, but we love the idea of tracking down the UK version, we’re certain it’s hiding somewhere.

“So, if you think you may be in possession of little Dougie then we want to know about it.

"A celeb in his own right so let’s give him the limelight he deserves. Operation find #DougsLittleBro is well and truly underway. Let’s bring these brothers together!”

Alex worked out that his prized spud could make around 500 chips and compared it to his own Albert Bartlett’s 7.5kg bag.

The 7.9kg spud is set to undergo DNA testing in Scotland to prove it’s actually a real potato before it can claim its Guinness World Records title.

The Airdrie potato brand hopes to unite the spud brothers via Zoom once it tracks down Doug’s little brother - unless Doug has been made into vodka by then as Colin has hinted at.

In addition to the 'coveted' title of little Dougie, the owner will be treated to a year’s supply of Albert Bartlett potatoes.

To enter your little Dougie post a picture of your potato on Instagram with its weight and the hashtag #DougsLittleBro.

Make sure you also follow Albert Bartlett on Instagram and tag them in your post. Entries are open until February 7.
